Global warming, cooling, or hogwash?

Ok, so I think that I am a little slow here. I just finished reading an article titled Failing ocean current raises fears of mini ice age from New Scientist. The piece asserts that the European continent may be in store for a mini ice age. As the article starts out, the culprit is clearly presented as global warming and that a mini ice age event is among the key indicators to support that position. However, the article ends up noting that this is not necessarily an anomoly and has happed twice already in recorded history. Once, after the big-daddy ice age about 12,000 years ago, and another mini ice age which was thought to have existed in Europe from 1300 to 1850. Huh?
